Glycolic peels explained

Glycolic peels are acids used to exfoliate the skin and work by loosening the glue-like attachments that occurs in skin ageing, pigmentation and acne. These peels have been shown to improve fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, reduce the appearance of light brown spots. The end result is clear rejuvenated skin.

What Is Involved? How many treatments are necessary?
We use Neostrata glycolic peels at Slievemore clinic. Peels begin at a strength of 20% and increase in percentage up to 70%. Dr. Fay will determine the correct program for your skin condition. Usually, a series of three to six treatments are required for optimum results. These are spaced a minimum of ten days apart. Usually approximately six treatments are recommended.

The Home Care Programme
Prior to your peel you will be advised to use a home care programme for 2 weeks before your peel. The home care programme ensures that your skin is able to tolerate glycolic acids.

What happens on the day of your Glycolic peel?

• Your skin is cleansed thoroughly.
• The glycolic peel is applied to your skin. A mild stinging sensation may occur. The peel is left on your skin for between 3-5 minutes.
• Redness may occur which usually subsides in first few days, which is normal.
• Sun protection factor is vital after your peel. Sun exposure is not advisable.

How Long Does the Peel Procedure Take?
The medical peel process takes about 15-20 minutes to perform.
